Tom and Daisy Buchanan

Tom Buchanan is a "hulky" wealthy man who is arrogant as well as a racist.  He is married to Daisy, who seems like a superficial, spoiled woman.  She is said to be Nick's second cousin and has a daughter with Tom.  Both Tom and Daisy live on the wealthy side of West Egg.  Tom cheats on Daisy, which does not seem to be a secret, as most people including Daisy know about this affair. 

Why would someone stay married with a person that cheats?

Nick Carraway

Nick is the narrator of this novel.  He is a quiet young professional from the Midwest learning about the bond business in New York.  He comes off as a trustworthy and reflective person, and for this reason people around him come to trust him and share their problems with him.  Although he gains insight to people's lives, tries to follow his fathers advise to never critictize other people's carelessness.  Nick will meet Jay Gatsby, which might change his life philosophy about judging others.
